Topic: Group/Sort Formula Posted: 07 Apr 2009 at 9:03am
I have a report that groups by response level then by department. Due to our directory structure our departments are not standardized. I have for example MIS, MIS Application Support, MIS Operations, etc.., what i would like to do is create a formula that would group and count all department fields that contain "MIS" and group them into a title group of MIS with total number of times it was listed. What will be best way to do this? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly sure what you want to do with this as an end result so hre are 2 options to play with. You could handle it by using either a select stament to filter anything out the does not start with MIS as:
left({table.department},3)="MIS"
or you could convert the data using a formula for grouping...
if left({table.department},3)="MIS" then "MIS" else whatever you want to happen here

NOte that the above assumes you do not have any non MIS departments that start with the string of "mis" like "mistake department" or "misery department".
If you have those you would have to add that into the formula to handle these odditites.
