everyone in the database has a field in the name table with nametype = 'a' (preferred). I want to pull those with nametype = 'nick' (nickname) and also those without a nickname.

I tried this:
if(isNull({name_full.nametype})) then ""
else if{name_full.nametype} = 'nick' then name_full.namefirst}

Just because nulls and strings can be confused, try this.

if len({name_full.nametype})=0 then ""
else if{name_full.nametype} = 'nick' then name_full.namefirst}

Check whether your query is returning data with nametype ='nick' and nametype with null values.

If you want to display null, there is no need of writing a formula. Just show the column value as already null is fetched.

Your question is not clear whether this formula is written for filtering the data or for display of nickname. Kindly clarify.
