Topic: Cross Tab report prints diff on user machines Posted: 09 Jan 2012 at 5:57am
I'm woke up one day about 12 years ago and someone had pinned a medal on
my shirt that said "Crystal Reports Expert" and since then I've had to
live up to that title within my company and with our customers. Last
week I got a call from a customer who has developed her own Cross Tab
Crystal Report in Crystal 11 and, according to their marketing
initiative they've placed a 3/4" blue stripe (rectangular drawing
object) down the left side of the page. It looks kind of like a gutter
on the page and all the data is shifted to the right edge. Since it is a
Cross Tab, the report is wider than 1 page so she checked the option on
the drawing object to "Repeat on horizontal pages". When she runs the
report it runs fine and the stripe prints on all pages, horizontal and
vertical. When one of her users prints the report it only prints on the
vertical pages but not on the ones that would spread out to the right
(i.e. the report is 3 pages wide so the stripe prints on page 1, then
page 4, then page 7, etc. for them).
She sent it to me asked me to check it out and it runs fine on my
machine but when I asked one of my co-workers to run the report it
prints only on the vertical pages, not the horizontal ones. The only
common denominator between me and my customer is that we both have
Crystal 11 on our machines and our respective co-workers do not! This
seems really strange to me so I told her I'd post something out here and
see if anyone else had experienced anything like this.

Printing directly from Crystal has always been tricky for me. One printer will print fine from Crystal another will only print garbage.
What I would do is get the report to look just like you want it in a PDF export. Then export to PDF and then print. This seems to clear up a lot of the weird printing issues with different computers and printers.

This report will be accessed through the program that we develop and sell. The user has access to a reports window and can choose the report they want to print along with various options. The weird thing about this is, my customer and her co-worker are printing to the same network printer. The report is stored on the network so it's not a matter of 2 different files or anything like that. And as a matter of fact, she sent me 2 PDFs of the report; one being from her machine and the other from the co-workers machine and each was different. Her big concern is that things will print differently when she sends the report out to other corporate offices but she can't even get the same report to print the same from 2 different machines WITHIN her office...

just a guess but under page set up try and set Printer Options 'No printer (optimize for screen display)' as TRUE and see if this at least gets consistent output regardless of the machine.

The report is set to "No Printer".. Still does the same thing. It's like the information in the report is being "downgraded" to a lower version where perhaps the funtion to "repeat on Horiztonal pages" wasn't an option. Is there an add-on or viewer/patch that could be installed on the users machines that don't actullay have Crystal XI on their machine.

Thanks for responding Phil. I'm trying to find out from the programmer right now what version of the viewer we install. That may help to know whether that version of the viewer supports that option, "Repeat on horizontal pages".
