Yes, the value is >4.56 in the DB but doesn't appear in the report.

If you are using the actually DB field in the report canvas then it should display automatically. I would guess that if this is the case there is a conditionally suppress on it. Right click on it and select format field. Look at Suppress option to see if there is a formula in it.
If the field on the report canvas is a formula field (converting the string to a number field) reomve the formula field from the canvas or suppress it and place teh DB field in its place.
