You could try a loop...
use local variables, set the starting value to the location of '<' and the ending location to the location of the '>' and get rid of everything in between including the <>. You would always be deleting characters that exist, and the location would never be negative.
just a thought, as an alternative solution that doesn't rely on a specific tag being present.
