OK, did as you suggested and added the 2 dateparts together and it ends up being the same as my existing formula. The end result is just mapping the minutes past midnight instead of graphing an average time of day. Darn it. Was hoping that might work but back to the drawing board. There was a snafu with installing Crystal 2013 so that will have to wait until next week to see if any significant changes have been made, but I am doubtful.....Will let you know if the versions make a difference once I get it installed. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

if you want the graph to show between 0 and 24
update your minutes to add the hours and minutes of the date part then divide that whole thing by 60.
your graph should already be set to average this
you can set the graph to always use a min value of 0 and a max of 24 with 23 divsion points.
