Is there a way to "debug" or "trace" what happens when a report runs?

It would be great to see what exact values the report sees when generates.

Click on the database menu
Then "Show SQL Query"

and cut and past that into the query tool for your RDMS.  If you do not have one try

I did that and my SQL query is fine.

I suspect my problem is in passing parameters between my report and my subreports. It would be great to be able to see what exact values are being passed.

If it is MS SQL server there is a tool (need to be sa) called profiler.  It will record the queries sent to the SQL server.  Other vendors have similar tools.
