Topic: Dynamic Data Source ? Posted: 23 Sep 2014 at 10:39am |
|
We create a lot of crystal reports on a local database and ship to our customers, in 90% of the cases, we never have to change the data source to the customer database. (it is an exact copy of the database where the reports are created)
On occasions, we will have to open the reports and change the data source to a local database. Also, sub reports have to be recreated manually instead of saving and reusing due to the same issue.
Is there a better way to manage data sources on reports that are shipped out to another site?
Thanks
Kurt

What version of Crystal are you using? How are your customers viewing their reports - through an application that you've written? If so, what language was it written in and which SDK are you using?

We are using CR2011, the reports are generated from a windows form application which is written in C#.
I did not write the application, but when I look at the references, the Crystal Decisions references version is listed as 13.0.2000.0 and the application was developed in Visual Studio 2010.

1. The SDK that was used is SAP Crystal Reports for Visual Studio SP 2. We are now up to SP 10 with SP 11 due out any day. I suggest upgrading the application to the latest version of the SDK.
2. You can't set a dynamic data source from within Crystal itself. Instead the application will have to be updated to provide that functionality and to set the data source for the report prior to opening it.

Thanks Dell,
I am going to write a simple application so I can test some of these settings, including using SQL Stored Procedures instead of subreports and also trying to pass in a database source.
Many Thanks!

Within the SDK you can set the datasource for a report. I know there's some sample code in the forums here that you can search for. There's also sample code available here: http://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/Crystal+Reports+for+.NET+SDK+Samples
Also, SP11 is now available. You can download it from here: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-7824. Download the latest "Install Executable" for integration into Visual Studio. The rest of the downloads are the various runtime install files to use when distributing your application.
