Hi, I'm using Crystal 2008. Hopefully I have a simply question. I have a report that is grouped on SSN. I want to sort the records in the group by last name, A-Z. Right now the report is sorted on SSN, low to high.

There's got to be an easy fix to this, right?

Thanks for your help!

can a group of SSN records have more than one last name?
If so which last name are you using and how do you decide that?
If it can only have one last name just join the last name and the SSN into one formula field and group on that instead.

I'd prefer to avoid that because yes, we've run into that exact situation. So I'd just prefer to sort on the last names that are grouped by SSN.

If the records are grouped by SSN and you would like to further sort it by last names, you could click on the "Record Sort Expert" symbol (the A to Z symbol).

You will see "Group#1: SSN", then select First Name from the Available Fields box to Sort Fields.

You can choose to sort it by ascending or descending order for both SSN and First Name.

That's what I've been trying and it's not working, which is why I'm turning to this site...What could cause this option to not work?

The record sort expert sorts records not groups.
group sorts happen then the remaining rows inside the group are sorted using the record sort criteria.

There is a seperate Group sort expert.
Since you did not indicate how you want to sort a group that has multiple last names I can't really answer the question.
However the group sort expert can use group summary results to sort on.
If you insert a min or max value of the last name for the SSN group you can use that result to sort the SSN groups.

I just changed my report to Group on Last Name, then on SSN and it sorted the last names A-Z alpha. If anyone has more than one record with a different last name but the same SSN, not sure how those records will look but this will do for now. thanks.
