I was wondering if anyone knows if Crystal Server can be configured to allow users to change the Data Source Server name (along with login credentials) so reports can be run against various databases. For example, Development, User Acceptance or Production?

We want to be able to switch data sources without have to modifying and saving the report. Currently, the closest I seem to be able to get is to prompt for user logon credentials but that does not allow the server to be changed when a user runs the report.
I have tried selecting
[x] Use custom database logon information specified here.
And then clearing the server name, but when the report is run, the server name is blank and no way to enter a value.

The reports have been uploaded to the server via Central Mgmt Console. The users log in via BI Launchpad and can run a report by selecting it and then View.

thanks

i dont think you can, but you could try to use sub reports
create a sub report for each server

Kostya1122 - thanks.

After some discussion amongst our devleopment group, the current plan is to create separate folders on the server for each of the database instances (DEV, UAT and PROD). A copy of each report will exist in each. I had hoped to not have multiple copies of the reports but this actually makes more sense since we need to test report changes in each of the database instances before they go to Production anyway.

We may limit the users view to the folder specific to their login (PROD users will only see the PROD folder, etc). Our Tech Support/Test users will be able to see all folders. All users will only have View capability so they will never be able to modify the reports.

I think this will accomplish what we need. Of course I am all ears to any other comments or suggestions fromanyone who has tackled this type of situation.

thanks.

well, there is a slight variant...if all of the databases are the same with same parameters and return the same record set...

have a stored proc on one server and depending on the 'server' option selected have the stored proc linked ot the report call the 'correct' stored proc on the other server and return the results.

It 'shouldn't' be too hard. The idea/goal is to not change the interface (the parameters being passed to the report) or the data structure (CR doesn't like that too much).

If you weren't calling the report from BOE, but from an application I would say to have the application get the data from whichever server is desired and then 'push' it to the report. Since the data is being pushed, the report doesn't care where the data came from, it just displays it.
