couldn't you just add 2 lines to your record selection like this
report > selection formulas > record
that is where you will add these lines.
{SO_DETAIL.ENTRY_DATE} < = "5/3/2008" AND {SO_DETAIL.ENTRY_DATE} >= "1/1/2006"
that means if that field doesn't meet that criteria it will not be included in your report.
should be that easy unless i'm missing something.

Each company has multiple sales orders spanning from 1990-present.
This selection formula does work to show the companies that placed orders during 2006-2008.
But it does not filter out the companies if they placed an order last year.
Basically I need some kind of selection criteria that shows companies that placed orders 06-08 but filters them out if they also have orders before or after those dates.

then you need to say
{field} in [the dates you want to see]
that will only show co's that fit your criteria in the dates that you select.
you can also just select all of your co's and in your details section right click the field, choose format field and set a formula to supress them if they have a sale in the dates outside of your range.
that should be all that you need.

I've tried to limit using a group selection formula and it does not work.
MAXIMUM ({SO_DETAIL.ENTRY_DATE}, {COMPANIES.COMPANY_NAME}) < DATETIME (2008, 04, 30, 00, 00, 00)
AND MINIMUM ({SO_DETAIL.ENTRY_DATE}, {COMPANIES.COMPANY_NAME}) >= DATETIME (2006, 01, 01, 00, 00, 00)
I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the formula above or if your plan of action is in some way different.
Could you please be more specific? I'd greatly appreciate your expertise.

i would just add it all in the record selection. it's pretty straight forward and should work for what you are looking for. it's how i do almost all of my reports.

For anyone else looking for an an answer to a similar problem... here is what worked for me.
Create a group on your {clientfield}
from menu select Report-Selection Formula-Group and enter this formula
MAXIMUM ({datefiel}, {clientfield}) < DATETIME (2008, 04, 30, 00, 00, 00)
AND MINIMUM ({datefield}, {clientfield}) >= DATETIME (2006, 01, 01, 00, 00, 00)
From Menu bar select Report-Section Expert-details-hide
