have a string that if empty need to highlight yellow, else just keep default background(clear)
 
Using many different scenarios and none are working...
tried to use format editor, by asking if field blank :(
used highlight expert not working
 
newbie to this sw
 
any help, much appreciated

I would try format the object, the font tab.
click the x-1 button next to color
I would do something like:
if isnull({table.field}) or {table.field} = "" then
  crYellow
else
  crWhite
 
the color names may be wrong, but the idea is there, and CR will give a list of the valid colors.

if the field is null you will likely have the same issue. since the value is null there is nothing to highlight.

You will likely need to create a formula field to convert NULL values to a single space then conditionally format that as lockwelle suggests.
 
if isnull(field) then " " else field
