Is the following not valid?

if ({Authorization_Release_Info.Data_Entry_Date}) < date(10/01/2012) then
"This report was filed before October of 2012"

Else
"This report was filed on October 1, 2012 or later"


It keeps giving me the Else part.

I pulled one of the files that was from 8/22/12 and it shows up
This report was filed on October 1, 2012 or later
