can't. not unless you run the subreport and suppress it prior to printing...
which will make your report slower since you are reading a subreport at least once possible more.
to get the value from the subreport, use a shared variable.
to run a subreport and suppress it, you need for the subreport to 1) not display any fields , 2) for the section that the subreport runs in, you need to go to section expert and select suppress blank sections.
