Topic: considering using Crystal Reports need advice Posted: 20 Apr 2012 at 5:30am
First off let me say I appreciate anyones input here and apologize if my wording or terminology used to reference stuff is incorrect.
I work for a Local Government Fire Department. We utilize a program called TeleStaff to manage our staffing on a daily basis. Each day we run manually manipulated reports in TeleStaff and take the information from the report and key it into Excel. The Excel file is for a one month period, it has a spreadsheet for each day of the month. Then there is a spreadsheet that caculates total and averages the information for the month. Each month is then used to build a Fiscal year summary.
The TeleStaff program has a reports module (needs to be purchased) that we can use that will allow us to have canned reports in the system so we can just click to run the report and it is the same values searched each time. But this reports module relies on the use Of Cyrstal Reports XI, and we have nobody that is familiar with it.
So the questions are:
1) has anyoned used TeleStaff and the Reports Module with Crystal XI and been able to export data into an excel spreadsheet that is already designed so that it can pull monthly/yearly averages?
2) how hard is crystal reports to learn?
3) does anyone have a better idea?

If the reports are built in then unless you want to modify them somehow you won't need to learn Crystal. There is a good chance that even if you knew Crystal and had a copy of Crystal Reports (which you would have to buy anyway) to modify them they may be locked to where you can't.
Crystal can export to an Excel Document so unless one of the built in reports doesn't compile the information you want you may need someone to design a report for you if you don't have anyone there that knows how. What I'd do is talk to the vendor and see what reports come with it and what it would take to include a report that exports to Excel with what you want, if it doesn't already.
