The database includes a text (string) field that can get quite large. Is there a way to display this field in two columns so that the width of each line is shorter, similar to newspaper formatting?

yes you could use formulas
first one is
left(data.field,(how long you want it to be))
second one is
mid(data.field,(where you want it to start),(how long you want it to be))
