I designed a report using multiple columns, and groups should use multiple columns as well.

And it looks fine, except when it gets to the bottom of the page, it would print out a group header at the bottom and then continue the details at the top in the next column.

Group together doesn't seem to do anything in this situation.

Is there a way to get around this?

I think his trick works for this problem (usually used to avoid orphaned group headers on pages rather than columns)...
add another group header section,
move it to be GH1a,
set it to be the height of GH1b and one detail section combined,
set Gh1a to 'Keep together' as True and underlay following sections as True
