Just wondering if it is possible to sort a report based on input by the user?
So just say the report has a customer Id, location, asset number,
Is it possible for the user to decide what they want the report ordered on?

yes.
just create a formula field to pick between these values and then sort on the formula field
if param=ID then customerid else if param=assess nmuber then assett number else ...
 
just make sure you can make the out put all of the same data type
