would a one to many relationship be causing these problems?

It could be making multiple rows but the ISNULL statement should still function.

That being said I have had problems with ISNULL and it having to always be he first part of every statement.
Does it work for either if you only use the isnull condition on each of these fields one at a time?
if isnull({tblWilliamsProjects.Project}) then "Hide" else "Show"
 
 
if isnull({tblWilliamsGrantExpenditures.ID-sbfrmWillamsGrantExpenditures}) then "Hide" else "Show"

All the examples you suggested have worked well. After working with the many suggestions and alot of trial and errors, I was able to get it to work properly with the 'section expert' formula you suggested. I really appreciate all of you efforts. Thanks for your time.
