     Posted: 24 Nov 2009 at 2:54am
Hello there,

I am currently working on a report that displays the reports stored on our BusinessObjects Enterprise XI server, and the software we use to extract the report data stores it in a MySQL database using an Object ID and a Parent ID. Therefore I would like to use hierarchy grouping to display the folders and reports stored on our server in this report.

However, the problem I'm having is with drilling down on the data. I would like to be able to present the highest group levels to start with (i.e. the root folders), and then let the user drill down through the hierarchy to see the reports (like you would using the tree view of Explorer). After frantically attempting this over a good few hours I have exhausted all ideas, and was hoping someone on here would be able to help me?

In case it helps the software I'm using to extract the data is APOS KPI Hours.

Many Thanks,
Ben

Can you give an example of your heirachical data?
Usually true Heirachical data applies to things like employees and supervisors where basically all employees are at the same group level they just report to different supervisors that are also at the same level. So if you Group on Employee field you may be able to use heirachical grouping if you can use data that shows who each employee is supervised by.

The objects are stored within one table, each having a unique ID, object name, and Parent ID (amongst other detail fields).

For example, a costing report with ID 32 may have a parent ID of 15, which links to a folder called 'Costing Reports'. This costing report folder may have a Parent ID of 0, which means it doesn't have a parent so it is the root folder.

However the problem isn't organising it into hierarchical data within Crystal - I've managed to do that using the 'Hierarchical Grouping Options' and it works fine. My problem is being able to drill down through the hierarchy (as they are all classed as group 1).

I would like it so a user can see the first level (ie the root folders), and then when they drill into that they see the name of the folder they're in and its contents, as well as the root folder name above that level.

Hope this makes sense? I'm trying to get it to present it like a folder hierarchy in Windows Explorer - you get the tree view at the side, and you can see the files in the current folder and the parent folders of the one you're currently in.

Thanks

If you used Heirarchical Grouping Then they should all be at the same level however if you drill down on a record that has noded children under it they should all open in the drill down.
That part is not working?
