Hello

I'm currently using mysql jdbc driver 5.17 in crystal report 2008 Developer version.

I have noticed a strange behavior in mysql jdbc driver where by it takes long time to render the results and after doing further investigation i noticed that crystal reports renders the results only after reading it fully.

Here are my performance info:

Performance Timing

Open Document: 0 ms
Run the Database Query: 14860 ms
Read Database Records: 11898 ms
Format First Page: 27038 ms
Number of pages formatted: 2
Average time to format a page: 13519 ms
Number of page starts generated: 236
Average time to generate a page start: 29 ms

The database query finished in 14 sec approx. but the viewer did not display any results until all the data was read.

Any ideas on how to improve this?

We have been using sybase jdbc driver and the behavior is very good actually whereby the results starts getting displayed by the viewer while reading the records. (100 records approx)

Any ideas on how to tune this and start displaying the results after it has read 100 records?

regards

Crystal doesn't render until it has read all the data...how will it know how to group and format a report until all data is read, how about aggregates that go in the header.  Also Crystal reads the data in multiple times, if you read help, it goes across it 3 times I think, first reading, then getting some simple totals, then the report display.

You can't make Crystal display before it has read all the data.  A SQL viewer has much less overhead, it doesn't care about formatting, conditional suppression, growing a line, or aggregates, it is just displaying the data.

Thanks Lockwelle.

The reports are transactional with no grouping and formatting.

Strangely, when i used sybase jdbc driver where we have similar query and data it was displaying results straight after reading 100 records and it was still reading the data.

Found out the problem!!!

I was using Binding sort control which requires the full data to be read first before displaying the results.

In this case, it makes sense for crystal reports to read all the data first.

As soon as i removed the sorting the results were instantenous (i.e. started displaying after reading 100 records)
