i have a string field whose running total count is what i want to find only when this field has "YB" or "YG" in it.

can anyone help me with that?

Set it as a COUNT for the field you want to count.

In the evaluate section select "use a formula" and make that :
{table.field} in ["YB,"YG"]
Reset as Never.
Place in the report footer.
