Topic: ClearQuest Report Help: Combining Reports into 1 Posted: 09 Jun 2009 at 9:26am |
|
Hello everyone,
So here's my situation. I am using IBM Rational ClearQuest and Crystal Reports to generate reports for my test engineering organization on the status of Testing.
Currently what I do is generate various queries in CQ to show me specific data, and then feed those queries into CR to report on. I have a Blocked test cases report, Untested test cases report, Incident report, General Status report, Test Case to requirement tracing report, etc.. etc...
What i have to do now is run every single report for the set of test plans for a project, and then combine them all manually either in acrobat if i export them to pdf, or excel if that's the way i choose to export.
It is a complete pain, and what i'd like to do is just have one report that pulls in all of those reports, keeping in mind the queries that go with them, and generates one big report.
My problem with not just putting all of this data in one report is that I am unsure how to distinguish the data once it's ALL in CR.
For instance, when i run the blocked report, what i'm sending to CR is ONLY the test cases that are blocked. That way i can just output a list of these cases. Maybe If i could figure out how to use grouping in a way where i could take all the data, and indicate somehow that i only want to look at test cases in test plans that are blocked, and report on those it could work.
But as my name suggests in this forum.. i'm very much a newbie in this.
Not sure if all of this made sense, hope it did and I hope someone might have some sort of solution. If not, i'll just continue to output the multiple reports to PDF and then combine the PDF documents into 1 for each project. :-(

The most base solution would be to create one report and insert multiple sub reports into it. If you are not using parameters in crystal (which I am guessing you are not based on your multiple views) it should work fine. You proabably do not even need a link between the reports.
Create one new report with multiple Report header sections (one per sub-report), click on insert subreport, choose an existing report, select one of your reports, do not link (probably), repeat for next report.
It will run slower than each individual report but wshould not be slower than the combined time to run all of the reports seperately.

Dblank,
Wouldn't this only work if I were sending the same query to each of those many reports? think of it as sending a different database to each report i guess. I'm in no way an expert but I'm just trying to think of the hurdles before i hit them.
When you build a report in ClearQuest it asks you for two things, "Report Format" which is basically what you design in CR, and "Query" which is a query you design to extract the data you want to send to CR to be reported on. Each one of these reports I build have a different set of queried data. One is just a dump of all the cases that are blocked, one is a dump of all the cases that are untested, one is a dump of all the cases that are failed, etc.. etc..
I wonder if i send a query of all the data to this conglomerate report, if it's going to fudge up my individual subreports. Maybe I need to somehow indicate in each subreport which data is being looked at. Is there a way to do that? Can i say something like "in this report header, only look at the "ClearQuest.test_result" items that have a result of "Blocked".
sorry i'm so wordy but it's hard to describe what i'm thinking sometimes.

No problem.
I can't speak to the usage of ClearQuest s I am not familiar with it but Crystal itself will allow you to use different views and select statements per sub report. You do not have to make the main report have anything to do with them (but this is me building from scratch and not through a ClearQuest GUI interface).
By inserting the sub-report that is already built it should not alter your already existing report that you are using as a sub-report in anyway so there should be no danger to try this.
If you are worried, make a copy of 2 of them and try this sub-report process out.
My guess is that in the CQ gui process of selecting tables, joins, etc it is building and saving either a view or stored procedure that is specific to that report. By inserting the already created report as a subreport it should carry that stored proc or view with it without any problems.
No way to know on the ClearQuest GUI until you try it.
Just start out with one or two to test the theory.

So i've got a report now that i just set in two subreports in. It does a general status of all test cases (pass, fail, blocked, etc..) and then another report header that contains the subreport to show a listing of all the cases that are blocked.
When i run it as is, the general status comes out right, but the blocked list shows all the cases, including blocked, failed, pass, untested, etc...
When I try to use select expert in the blocked report to set it to only look at cases where ClearQuest.test_result = Blocked then the general status gets screwed up and only reports on blocked data as well.
is there any way to make one report header look at all the data, and then another report header only look at data where test_result=blocked?
I was thinking of doing some nested grouping. Group #1a = test plan name Group #1b = test result = blocked
or something like that... but i'm not sure
any ideas?

Sorry. I thought your "views" had pared this down without the need of the select expert.
Open each sub report and manage the Crystal Select expert seperately for each one. Since these are not linked you can pare each report seperately by adding in select statement per sub report.
Main report should have nothing in the Select Expert.
Sub Report 1 - no select statement (I think since it is all data and doing what you want).
Sub report 2 - add in ClearQuest.test_result = "Blocked" (it won't impact sub-report 1 at all).
Keep going per sub report.
Make sense?

So here's the latest.
If i do a subreport from a file in the report footer of a report that i built to contain multiple subreports, it works and displays 1 subreport. However, if i put another subreport into another report footer or header, when i run the report i get a Crystal Viewer error message that says "Unknown Query Engine Error"
anything i've found on the internet with regard to this issue indicates that you must do a "verify database". However, i cant do that because i'm not connecting to a database, Clearquest itself is feeding the data into CR.
any ideas of what the issue is?

Sorry, not much help on this.
I would check the Database, check database location and see what is coming up there.
