Topic: When Table structures are still in 'flux'..

As you all know, sometimes tables are changed whilst still developing reports against them.
My question is how to handle a situation where a table name has changed.
If you remove the old and add in the new named one, any fields are removed from the report (or is there a way to stop this).
Is it best practice to create formula fields for all the fields on the report, so they at least will stay even if the table is removed?
Regards
