I have several tables and several views in my report.  Which (tables or views) slow the system down more?  Is there a way to speed things along?  Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that it is not a simple question. Part of it depends on (at least) what your hardware and software is, what kinds of joins you are doing in the report as well as all of your views and how much data you are churning. Outer joins usually slow things down, views can really bog things down depending on how they are built, you might have some network bottle necking depnding on your data movement. There are really to many variables to answer this question well. Sorry.

If you're not using a file-based database such as FoxPro or Access, there are a couple of things that may help:

- In Report Options, turn on Use Indexes or Server for Speed and Perform Grouping on Server.  (Turn this on for all new reports on the Database tab of the Options menu item.)

- Avoid using formulas that contain Crystal functions to sort, group, or filter data.  These will cause most of the work to be done on the workstation that's running the report instead of on the database.  With a filter of this type, many more records than actually appear on the report will be downloaded to Crystal for processing because Crystal will do the processing.
