hi
i am using vb.net 2008 prof. and crystal reports bundled along with it and ms - access.
i have 2 questions..
i am new at using both vb as well as cr now if u dont understand what i mean to ask..pls. tell me so that i can put it in a better way.
i am giving my client a option to print reports for his budget requirements
i have created 10 tables namely Add1, Add2....Add5 and Less1, Less2 ...Less5 in all 10 tables and i am gathering the data that he requires into this table to disply.
now my prob is as under :

1. i have created details section 1 below the other to put in the data from the above 10 tables. the data is coming ...but say i have 2 records in add1 table and 2 records in less1 table and the rest r blank. then the details from add1 r showing multiple times and also the details from less1 r showing multiple times. say i have itemno1 in add1 table then it is showing in the details section for add1 table and then 2 more times i.e. 1 each for the record nos. in less1 table. how do i avoid this.

2. the last record of each table contains the total of that table is there any way i can make this record as bold. ( i have a field named istotal as boolean and that i make yes for the record containing total)

i hope i have been able to explain my prob .
if not pls. let me know so that i can explain in a better way.
pls. get back to me at the earliest.
thankx a lot

for number 2, you should be able to write a formula in the font tab of the formatting field.  Right click on the field, click format field, click the font tab, select the isTotal field...
if {istotal}=true then
  crBold
else
  crNormal

should bold the fields that you desire.

number 1 is more difficult, if you could create a group you could display the answer in the group footer, but that doesn't sound possible given the layout.  Unfortunately, you will need to find a way to filter out duplicates or group the information is such a way you can suppress the details to only show the pertinent info.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Hope this helps.

For question 1 you are most likely running into problems with your joins in your 10 tables. I have found that many people not comfortable with Crystal reports and grouping but confident with Access end up doing all of their calculations in external tables and try to bring that into the report. It is a bit counter-productive. YOu end of just pulling in fields one at a time into a header or footer to avoid the duplicates that you are describing. I recommend looking at how you have set up these 10 tables, most likely based on 1 or 2 tables that have the original data. Are you doing a lot of calculations in creating these tables that you could or should be doing in crystal reports itself?

Good point.  I was thinking of suggesting either a view or stored procedures, but I am not familar with Access to know if either of these are viable solutions.

thankx for ur reply. i dont have to do any calculations just pulling the data from the data table for that particular code and displaying it. actually its a budget prog. for a municipal corporation. all the calculation is done and stored in the main table . i just have to call all the fields of that table.

if u can guide me to creating a report without putting the data into the temp table i would b much obliged.
let me again remind u ...am very new to vb.net and crystal.
thankx for ur help...

So basically you have all of your data that do NOT have repeating rows or need to be grouped in any way, correct?
If that is the case and you simply wnat to display one field from one row from one table at any point in the report you can put all of these items in your Report Header or Report Footer. You can create text objects to label the data for the end user to understand what they are looking at.
It is easier to make multiple Report Header sections to move items around and manage it.
Don't create any groups and suppress the details altogether.
This is not really a very good use of Crystal but if I understand your problem correctly it should work.

I think you are going to have to handle this in a view (or multiple views) and use the views for your data source rather than the original tables. Without seeing the data or how they are joined it is really hard to assist much beyond this. What most likely is happening is that you your joins are creating duplication of the data which is then getting displayed. Since you have so many tables I don't think you can handle this by grouping but it may be possible. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
