Topic: How Can I Rank in Crystal Posted: 16 May 2008 at 9:59am |
Does anyone know how the ranking function works in Crystal?
I'm trying to develop a Sales report by Territory. The report has a "% Attainment" for each territory. I need to rank the territories by "% Attainment". The report is sorted in territory number order and cannot be changed. The % Attainment is calculated on Grouping line.

Let me try to restate the question. You have a report. It is currently both grouped and sorted by territory. You want to sort the groups by Attainment, so that the territory with the highest Attainment appears first. Is this correct?
If "% Attainment" is a relatively simple summary calculation, then this is possible. Go into the Group Sort Expert, choose "All" in the drop-down on the left, and choose the appropriate summary function on the right. If it is not a simple calculation, particularly if it involves referencing other formulas, running totals, or variables, then you probably cannot sort the entire report on it. As a note, though, you may be able to create something like a cross-tab in the report footer which will sort this way.
If this is not your goal, please re-state your original question, possibly with a brief example.

The current report is grouped and sorted by Territory Number. The % Attainment is a formula recalculated calculated each month. The Territories are then ranked on % Attainment. The requirement is to keep the report sorted by Territory number.
Exp:
Territory % Attainment Rank
11A00 89% 3
11B00 96% 2
11C00 72% 4
11D00 100% 1

Ah. Now I see what you mean. A different animal altogether.
Off-hand, I don't know how to do this. Let me try a few things and get back to you.

Using Excel or a Business Intelligence tool like Brio there is a Rank function that makes this very easy to do. I don't think Crystal has such a function? When creating sales reports this is a very important requirement.

After talking to several technical support people at Business Objects they basically said Crystal IX can't handle ranking. They told me to try Crystal 2008, saying 2008 has many new features. You need XP in order to use Crystal 2008. That's what I'm waiting on.

It appears from the research that Jacob has done that CR XI isn't capable of doing this.
