I'm trying to create a formula that will count the number of 'chits' per day. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Depends on your data. Usually you have one row of data per 'chit' with a date field.
group on the date field set to per day and do an insert Summary as a COUNT of the PrimaryKey field (other fields can be used) per group. This will appear on the group footer. It can be moved to the group header if needed.
