I have a sub report which is linked to the main report by ContactID.
 
However I need to pass the paramater ?StartDate to the sub report - how do I do it.

Create an additional link that connects to your parameter.  Then, if you don't really need it in your selection criteria, you can manually delete it from the sub-report's selection formula but still have it available in your sub-report.
